What is Lidar?

Mar 08, 2022

If AMR is likened to a human being, what would its "eyes" be? In response to this problem, there are many views in the market, the first is lidar, and the second is vision sensor, of which the use of lidar as the "eye" is the current mainstream solution.

LiDAR (LiDAR, Light Detection and Ranging), usually consists of a laser transmitter, an optical receiver, a turntable, and an information processing system. It uses a laser beam as an information carrier to emit detection signals (laser beams) to the target, and then receives The received signal (target echo) reflected from the target is compared with the transmitted signal, and after proper processing, the relevant information of the target can be obtained, such as target distance, azimuth, altitude, speed, attitude, and even parameters such as shape. Taking industrial AMR as an example, a mobile robot equipped with lidar can complete functions such as obstacle avoidance, navigation, positioning, measurement and mapping.

In fact, no matter which scene it is applied to, the essence of lidar as an "eye" is to continuously scan the laser to obtain the distance information of surrounding objects and construct a flat graph. When the mobile robot runs for the first time, it will first record the flat terrain in the scene, and then in real-time operation, by continuously emitting lasers, it determines the variables that appear in the scene terrain, such as the movement of people and objects, to achieve the goal of navigation and obstacle avoidance.
