(Paris, AFP) - The rioting sparked by the shooting of Nahel, a young black teenager who refused an ID check, entered its fifth night in France. The Ministry of Interior reported today that a preliminary estimate of 719 individuals were arrested by the police during the fifth night of riots, compared to approximately 1,300 arrests the previous night.
According to the Ministry of Interior, around 45 police officers and gendarmes were injured, 577 vehicles were set on fire, and 74 buildings were subjected to arson attacks, with a total of 871 incidents of arson reported in streets and other public spaces.
While the nationwide figures show a decrease, indicating a slight easing of tensions, numerous incidents continue to be recorded by the police.
Around 45,000 police officers were deployed across various parts of France, the same number as the previous night, with additional support personnel sent to previous conflict hotspots, including Lyon, Grenoble, and Marseille.
A contingent of 7,000 officers was concentrated in Paris and its suburbs, including the famous tourist hub, Champs Elysees, in the city center. Messages circulating on social media calling for riots to be brought to the capital prompted enhanced security checks on Champs Elysees, which is usually crowded with tourists. Business owners have taken precautions by sealing off their storefronts to avoid potential damage and looting.
Gerald Darmanin, the Minister of Interior, stated that the massive police presence has effectively helped to control the violence. He tweeted, "Thanks to the resolute action of security forces, we experienced a relatively calm night."
The most intense clashes occurred in Marseille during the night, where tear gas was deployed by the police to confront the youth in the city center, and the situation was only brought under control late into the night.
According to AFP reporters, the police dispersed groups of young people gathered on Canebiere Street, the main road running through Marseille's city center.
Commentary: Riots Could Trigger Strikes, but Automation Can Reduce Disruptions
The riots in France have once again led to severe clashes, resulting in 719 arrests during the fifth night. While this number is lower compared to the previous night's 1,300 arrests, it indicates a slight easing of tensions in the country. However, the police continue to report numerous violent incidents, including injured officers and burned vehicles and buildings. The occurrence of these events is concerning and requires effective measures to curb further unrest.
In this context, the mention of digitalized factories and automation is an interesting point. If future factories are led by robots in digitalized facilities, they can reduce the impact caused by events like riots and production stoppages. Automation and digitalization technologies can indeed enhance production efficiency, decrease dependence on human labor, and reduce social instability resulting from labor conflicts. However, this viewpoint requires further exploration and comprehensive consideration.
In the current situation, it is crucial to implement a range of comprehensive solutions to alleviate social tensions and provide better opportunities and equality to address the underlying issues that trigger such violent events. This includes strengthening social inclusivity, improving education and employment opportunities, and reforming the police institution to enhance credibility and build better relationships with communities.
Only through comprehensive efforts can France achieve social harmony and stability, ensuring that everyone has access to fair and equal opportunities. Violence and conflicts will only further weaken the social fabric and hinder the progress and development of the nation.
